SACRAMENTO, Calif. (November 1, 2004) - The California Medical Association and California Consumer Federation said Friday they will ask the California Attorney General to investigate an internal e-mail from Wal-Mart to its employees attacking Proposition 72 on Tuesday’s California ballot — an initiative that would require businesses of 50 or more employees to provide health insurance, or pay a fee into a state-run insurance plan. According to the two groups, the e-mail said that if the measure passes, Wal-Mart associates would no longer be able to choose between the company’s health care plan or its HMO offerings, “but rather the control would be put in the hands of the government.” The two groups said they are asking for a determination on whether the statements constitute coercive and/or illegal corporate campaign activity.
