Labor Negotiations to Resume Next Week in Seattle

SEATTLE (June 30, 2004) - Negotiations are scheduled to resume here next week with a federal mediator after five locals of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union and the chains they are negotiating with here agreed to extend their contract through July 9. The two sides agreed to bring in a federal mediator. Employees of Albertsons, Safeway, and Kroger’s QFC and Fred Meyer chains have been working under contract extensions since May 2. "I think there's still a lot of work that needs to be done," Jill Cashen, a spokeswoman in the Washington headquarters of the UFCW, told SN yesterday. "Obviously we're far apart on health-care issues, so hopefully a third party can come in and help move things along."
