About Us Page
Local 227 is an aggressive modern organization affiliated with the United
Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) International Union. Our home is Louisville,
Kentucky with offices in Lexington, Owensboro, and Madisonville, Kentucky. We
represent 18,000 members in Kentucky and Southern Indiana. Local 227 is
the largest local union in Kentucky.
Local 227 members are a diverse group who work in a variety of industries.
Members work in retail grocery stores, packing houses, food processing
and manufacturing plants. Others work in the garment industry, trucking
and health care where they enjoy some of the best contracts in the Midwest.
We are proud of our long and rich 104 year history. Founded by militant yet humble workers who not only survived the struggles but were on the front lines fighting for social justice and building what has become Local 227. Each generation over the decades--contract by contract, worker by worker, built a union strong enough to win the outstanding wages, benefits, and working conditions our members enjoy today. This link is to a summary of our history.
We are people who despite our differences, are united in the common goal of helping each other achieve dignity and fairness in the work place and a fair wage for a fair day's work. We are proud of the fact that our Executive Board is made up of rank and file members who have given of their time and talent to debate and decide important issues confronting our union.
